In a bid to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance connectivity within the city, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) is set to embark on an ambitious project—constructing the inner ring road. Spanning a length of 128 kilometers, this road will not only divert heavy vehicles away from the city center but also integrate seamlessly with the outer ring road being developed by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC). With the inclusion of 15 flyovers, two railway over bridges, and five tunnels, the inner ring road aims to provide a smooth and efficient transportation network for Pune’s residents and visitors.
Decongesting City Roads
The primary objective behind the construction of Pune’s inner ring road is to alleviate the burden on the existing city roads caused by heavy vehicular traffic. Currently, heavy vehicles pass through the city center, leading to congestion and delays. By diverting these vehicles to the inner ring road, the PMRDA aims to improve traffic flow and reduce travel time for commuters.
The Revised Plan
In the revised plan put forth by the PMRDA, the inner ring road will cover a stretch of 88 kilometers, with the remaining 40 kilometers falling under the jurisdiction of the MSRDC’s outer ring road project. This strategic collaboration between the two entities ensures a holistic approach to road development and maximizes the overall impact on traffic management.
Phased Construction Approach
The inner ring road will be constructed in eight phases, allowing for systematic implementation and efficient resource allocation. The phased approach enables early completion of crucial sections, ensuring that the benefits of the inner ring road can be realized incrementally. This also minimizes disruptions to the city’s existing transportation infrastructure during the construction phase.
Enhancing Traffic Flow
To ensure smooth traffic flow along the inner ring road, several infrastructure elements will be incorporated. The road will feature 15 flyovers, strategically designed to eliminate intersections with existing roads. Additionally, two railway overbridges and five tunnels will facilitate seamless connectivity and efficient movement of vehicles. These measures aim to create a hassle-free commuting experience for Pune’s residents and visitors.
The PMRDA has secured a budget approval from Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde for the inner ring road project. The revised expenditure stands at a substantial Rs 14,000 crore, with a major share of the funds allocated for land acquisition. This financial commitment demonstrates the government’s determination to address Pune’s transportation challenges and improve the overall quality of life for its citizens.
While the PMRDA focuses on the development of the inner ring road, the MSRDC is concurrently working on the construction of the outer ring road. This coordinated effort between the two agencies ensures seamless integration and connectivity between the inner and outer ring roads, creating a comprehensive transportation network for Pune.
Outer Ring Road Details
The MSRDC’s outer ring road project comprises two parts—the Eastern Ring Road and the Western Ring Road. The Eastern Ring Road spans 74 kilometers, running from Urse on the Yashwantrao Chavan Expressway to Shivare on the Pune-Satara national highway. The Western Ring Road is a circular 63-kilometer stretch that connects Shivare back to Urse. These roads will have varying widths of 90 to 110 meters, providing three lanes on either side for most sections and four lanes on certain stretches. With the inclusion of interchanges, underpasses, overpasses, bridges, culverts, and tunnels, the outer ring road aims to provide a robust and efficient transportation infrastructure.
