Cyclone Mocha Updates: Low Pressure Area Forms in Bay of Bengal, Unlikely to Impact Tamil Nadu or Bengal Coast

Pressure area forming that is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm called Cyclone Mocha

As we approach the month of May, the Bay of Bengal is showing signs of activity with a low pressure area forming that is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm called Cyclone Mocha by May 9, according to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). However, the Regional Meteorological Centre has stated that the cyclonic system is not expected to have any impact on Tamil Nadu, and sources from the Met department have suggested that the Bengal coast is unlikely to be hit by the storm.

Formation and Potential Impacts

At this point, the weather officials have indicated that the cyclonic system may be veering into the eastern range of the Bay, affecting Myanmar and bringing only moderate thundershowers to Bengal. The system’s course is unpredictable, and it is not possible to determine its path at this juncture.

According to the IMD, the weather system is likely to form a depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal around May 9 and then intensify into a cyclonic storm, while moving northwards towards the central Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Andaman sea. As of now, it seems that the system is not likely to hit the Tamil Nadu or Bengal coast, and it is expected to bring only moderate rainfall and thundershowers to the region.

Preparing for Cyclonic Storm

Even though the impact of Cyclone Mocha is not expected to be severe in Tamil Nadu or Bengal, it is essential to take precautions and be prepared for any potential disruptions caused by the storm. Here are some important steps to follow:

  1. Stay informed: Keep track of the latest updates and news on Cyclone Mocha through reliable sources like the IMD, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and other official channels.
  2. Secure your home: Ensure that your home is secure and protected against strong winds and heavy rainfall. Trim any weak branches, and check your doors and windows for any gaps or leaks.
  3. Stock up on essentials: Keep a stock of essential supplies such as food, water, and medicines, as well as a first-aid kit and emergency lights.
  4. Stay indoors: Avoid venturing outdoors during the storm, and stay indoors until it is safe to do so.
