IITM And Tezpur University Sign MoU To Evaluate Carbon Exchange In Kaziranga

The collaboration between the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune, and Tezpur University marks a significant step towards assessing the net ecosystem exchange of carbon dioxide in Kaziranga National Park.

The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune, and Tezpur University have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This collaboration aims to shed light on the crucial research area of biosphere-atmosphere exchange of greenhouse gases and energy. By assessing the carbon dynamics in Kaziranga National Park, this research will contribute to the development of sustainable conservation strategies. The MoU was signed in the virtual presence of Union Minister of Earth Sciences, Kiren Rijiju, and department secretary Dr. M Ravichandran, marking a significant milestone in environmental research and conservation efforts.

Collaborative research areas

The collaborative efforts between IITM, Pune, and Tezpur University will encompass a wide range of research areas, with a focus on understanding the net ecosystem exchange of carbon dioxide. The key research areas include:

1. Biosphere-Atmosphere exchange of Greenhouse Gases and Energy

The exchange of greenhouse gases and energy between the biosphere and the atmosphere plays a crucial role in regulating our climate. By investigating this exchange, the researchers aim to quantify the carbon fluxes in Kaziranga National Park. This analysis will provide valuable insights into the carbon balance and its implications for climate change.

2. Observation of Meteorological and Bio-Meteorological parameters

To comprehensively understand the carbon dynamics, the research collaboration will involve the observation of various meteorological and bio-meteorological parameters. These parameters include rainfall, temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and direction, radiation, soil temperature, and soil heat flux. By monitoring and analyzing these parameters, the researchers will gain a comprehensive understanding of the factors influencing carbon exchange in the park.

3. Eddy covariance and other systems

The collaboration will leverage advanced measurement techniques such as Eddy Covariance to quantify the exchange of carbon dioxide between the ecosystem and the atmosphere. This method allows for real-time measurements of fluxes, providing accurate and detailed data. The researchers will also utilize other state-of-the-art systems to enhance their understanding of carbon dynamics and ecosystem functioning.

Significance of research

Forests play a crucial role in sequestering carbon dioxide, acting as valuable carbon sinks that mitigate the impacts of human-induced emissions. However, with the ongoing global warming, it is imperative to assess the capacity of forests to absorb carbon and understand the factors that influence this process. Dr. Nirmali Gogoi, the Coordinator of the Project, emphasized the importance of scientific research in investigating the impact of global warming on the carbon absorption capacity of forests. By conducting comprehensive studies, the researchers will shed light on the potential changes in carbon dynamics in the park, providing valuable insights for conservation efforts and policy formulation.
