Imran Khan Arrested Inside Court, Sparking Protests and Controversy

Earlier this week, Imran Khan was arrested

Earlier this week, Imran Khan was arrested on Monday as he attempted to enter a courtroom in Islamabad for a hearing in one of many cases pending against him since his ouster from office last year. His supporters organized protests across the country after he was taken into custody by paramilitary forces from the court premises, prompting his supporters to organize protests across the country.

Leaders from Khan’s party, Pakistan-Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), claim the police smashed a window and dragged him outside the courtroom where biometric data was being collected. The dramatic manner of the arrest has raised questions about its legality, with many suggesting that it was politically motivated.

Khan faces charges in the Qadir Trust case, which concerns allegations that Bahria Town allotted land worth millions to Al-Qadir Trust, owned by the PTI chairman Mr. Khan and his wife. According to Islamabad Police, the arrest was conducted by the National Accountability Bureau for causing the national treasury losses. As a result of the circumstances, many speculate that the arrest wasn’t solely based on the merits of the case.

In a video tweeted by his party, Khan had doubled down on his accusations against Major-General Faisal Naseer, who he says was involved in the assassination attempt against him in Wazirabad. Khan had also claimed that Major Naseer was responsible for killing senior journalist Arshad Sharif brutally. After Khan was suspected of making baseless allegations against an officer of the intelligence agency ISI, the country’s powerful army arrested him a day later.

The PTI has called for supporters to take to the streets in protest, prompting Islamabad police to warn that action would kick in in case of violation. Khan’s arrest has reignited controversy surrounding the country’s judiciary and law enforcement agencies, with many accusing them of being influenced by the powerful military.

Imran Khan’s arrest has once again plunged Pakistan into political turmoil. With protests spreading across the country, it remains to be seen what the long-term impact of this arrest will be on the country’s already fragile democracy.
