Kargil Vijay Diwas: India celebrates 24th anniversary of its victory over Pakistan

Our sincere tributes to our war heroes and heartfelt gratitude.

Kargil War:

July 26 is celebrated as Kargil Vijay Diwas every year to observe India’s victory over Pakistan in 1999. The Kargil War was fought between India and Pakistan at the Line of Control (LoC) in the Kargil district of Jammu and Kashmir, where the Indian Army recaptured the famous ‘Tiger Hill’ and other important and strategic peaks like Tololing and Point 4875 under ‘Operation Vijay’, evicting Pakistani troops from Indian territory.

The conflict was triggered by the infiltration of Pakistani soldiers and Kashmiri militants into Indian-controlled territory in the Kargil sector. The aim of the Pakistani forces was to occupy strategic positions along the Line of Control (LoC) and disrupt Indian control over the region. This incursion caught India by surprise as it occurred in an area not previously considered vulnerable to such aggression.

The Indian armed forces responded with a massive military operation called “Operation Vijay.” The Indian Air Force played a crucial role in providing air support, and the Indian Army launched a series of ground offensives to regain control of the occupied territories. The mountainous terrain and harsh weather conditions made the task challenging, but the Indian forces displayed valor and determination throughout the conflict. The Kargil War posed immense challenges due to its rugged geographical terrain and inhospitable climate. Nevertheless, the Indian Armed Forces displayed unwavering determination and resilience in reclaiming the occupied regions.

To honor the supreme sacrifice of the brave soldiers and commemorate the victory, Point 5140 in Kargil has been named ‘Gun Hill’, paying tribute to the Regiment of Artillery’s lethal and accurate firepower that had a telling effect on the enemy troops and their defenses during the war.

On July 26, 1999, the Indian Army declared the successful culmination of ‘Operation Vijay’, marking victory after a nearly three-month-long battle with Pakistani troops on the icy heights of Kargil in Ladakh.

Our sincere salutes and heartfelt gratitude.
