The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted that the monsoon season in Pune is likely to continue until October, even as the official end of the monsoon is just nine days away. The IMD has advised residents to keep their umbrellas handy as rainfall is expected in Pune and its surrounding areas for the next five days.
Current Weather Conditions
Currently, the maximum temperature in Pune is expected to reach around 30 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature will hover around 22 degrees Celsius on Saturday.
Rainfall Status in Maharashtra
While overall rainfall in the state has been normal, with a 9% deficit compared to the average, Pune district is currently facing a 15% deficit in its average normal rainfall. However, there is hope that the expected rainfall in the coming days will help compensate for this shortfall.
IMD Meteorologist’s Insights
Jyoti Sonar, a meteorologist at IMD Pune, explained, “A low-pressure system that was previously over Maharashtra has now moved to the form of a cyclonic circulation near Gujarat. There is a low-pressure belt between Sikkim and south Maharashtra, which is expected to keep the monsoon active to vigorous in the state over the next 48 hours. Rainfall activities, along with isolated thunder activities, are predicted to persist for the next three to four days, and a color-coded warning has been issued accordingly.”
As of 8:41 p.m. on Thursday, Shivajinagar recorded 2.1 mm of rainfall, while Lavale experienced the highest rainfall at 22.5 mm. Chandrapur, on the other hand, recorded the highest rainfall in the state with 150 mm on Thursday. However, the monsoon has been relatively inactive since August, except for a few days in September.
Air Quality Assessment
In terms of air quality, Pune’s current Air Quality Index (AQI) stands at 49, which falls within the “good” category according to the Central Pollution Control Board’s classification. AQI levels between 0-50 are considered good, 51-100 as satisfactory, 101-200 as moderate, 201-300 as poor, 301-400 as very poor, and over 400 as severe.
Looking ahead, the weather in Pune for the next seven days is expected to see maximum temperatures around 29-30 degrees Celsius, with minimum temperatures hovering around 22 degrees Celsius throughout the week.
