PCMC Implements Revolutionary Measures To Combat Pollution With Electric Vehicles

PCMC's groundbreaking initiatives in adopting electric vehicles showcase its commitment to combatting pollution and promoting sustainable practices.

To combat pollution and promote sustainable practices, the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has taken bold initiatives by embracing electric vehicles (EVs). With a strong focus on curbing vehicular pollution, PCMC has recently introduced a fleet of 79 EVs, out of which 22 are already in operation. This groundbreaking endeavor marks a significant milestone in the corporation’s commitment to a cleaner and greener future.

Expansion of PCMC’s fleet

Continuing its commitment to sustainable transportation, PCMC has expanded its fleet by incorporating seven Tata Nexon electric vehicles. The grand inaugural ceremony, held at the main building in Pimpri, witnessed the presence of Commissioner Shekhar Singh and other distinguished officials, underscoring the significance of this development. The addition of these cutting-edge vehicles signifies PCMC’s dedication to embracing advanced technology for a sustainable and eco-friendly transportation system.

Flexible lease agreements for future adaptability

PCMC’s forward-thinking approach is reflected in the lease agreements for the EVs, which span a duration of five years. This flexibility allows for adjustments in the number of vehicles based on future requirements, ensuring that PCMC can readily adapt to changing circumstances. Presently, the fleet comprises 25 Tata Nexon EVs and 54 Tata Tigor EVs. Such adaptability not only provides a future-proof solution but also ensures that PCMC remains at the forefront of the transition towards electric mobility.

Gradual transition to electric vehicles

In line with its progressive policy, PCMC aims to gradually replace conventional petrol and diesel vehicles with electric alternatives. As part of this transition, the Municipal Corporation has sanctioned a total of 95 electric vehicles for use by officers and officials1. This noteworthy step underscores PCMC’s commitment to reducing emissions and promoting sustainable transportation solutions. By setting an example for other municipalities, PCMC actively contributes to the larger goal of building a greener and healthier planet.

Cutting-edge features of Tata Nexon and Tata Tigor EVs

The introduction of Tata Nexon EVs ushers in a new era of modern features and advanced technology in PCMC’s fleet. Equipped with GPS trackers, these vehicles offer efficient navigation and enhanced fleet management capabilities, ensuring optimized operations. Remarkably, the Tata Nexon EVs can cover an impressive distance of up to 312 kilometers on a single charge, consuming a mere 30 units of electricity. Similarly, the Tata Tigor EVs offer reliable performance, with a range of up to 170 kilometers on a single charge, utilizing 26 units of electricity. These remarkable features provide PCMC with practical, eco-friendly, and sustainable transportation solutions, promoting a cleaner and greener city for its residents.

Cost savings and environmental benefits

The adoption of electric vehicles brings forth significant benefits for PCMC, both environmentally and financially. Babasaheb Galbale, Associate City Engineer, emphasizes the positive impact of EV adoption, stating, “The introduction of EVs not only contributes to reducing pollution but also results in cost savings for the Municipal Corporation. The maintenance and repair expenses for EVs are considerably lower compared to traditional petrol and diesel vehicles”. PCMC’s decision to embrace electric vehicles not only aligns with its environmental goals but also proves financially advantageous for the corporation. This prudent step sets a remarkable precedent for other municipal bodies, inspiring them to follow suit and contribute to a sustainable future.
