In a remarkable achievement that exemplifies the power of education and community support, ten students from the Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj English Medium School in Kasarwadi, which was rebuilt with generous funding from renowned Bollywood actor Rekha, embarked on a journey to Germany. These students, hailing from humble backgrounds in the Kasarwadi area of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), are set to participate in a prestigious youth summit. Their projects, focused on water conservation in line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, are poised to make a significant impact on a global scale. This article delves into their inspiring journey and the transformative efforts undertaken by the PCMC and the Akanksha Foundation.

The Genesis of Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj English Medium School

Established four decades ago by the PCMC in collaboration with the Akanksha Foundation, the Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj English Medium School has been a beacon of education, catering to the underprivileged sections of society. However, the school faced significant challenges with its infrastructure, hindering the learning environment for its students. Recognizing the need for a conducive educational space, Bollywood actress Rekha, during her tenure as a Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament, allocated a remarkable sum of Rs 3 crore from her MP funds towards the construction of a new school building.

A New Chapter Unfolds: The Students’ Journey to Germany

In an extraordinary milestone for the school, ten exceptional students were selected to represent India at an international youth summit held in Berlin, Germany. This prestigious invitation highlights the remarkable work accomplished by the school and its students in the realm of sustainable development. Among the talented students venturing abroad are Tahura Maniyar, Shravani Tonage, Gaurav Pawar, Kshitij Gujar, Isha Patil, Tahura Shaikh, Sai Landge, Atharva Bhaip, Ayesha Mustafa, and Prathamesh Jadhav. Accompanying them are their dedicated teachers, Florina Phillips and Gayathri Jayakumar.

Projects on Water Conservation: Addressing Global Challenges

The primary focus of the students’ projects revolves around water conservation, aligning with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. These goals, comprising 17 interconnected global objectives set in 2015, strive for their attainment by 2030. The students from Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj English Medium School showcased their projects to an international audience during the youth summit in Berlin. Through their innovative and impactful initiatives, these young change-makers aim to create awareness, drive change, and inspire others to join the mission of preserving our planet’s most vital resource—water.

Empowering Students through Cross-Country Exchange Programs

The journey of the selected students began well before their departure to Germany. As part of a cross-country exchange project, the students engaged in collaborative initiatives with their peers from Germany, Spain, Hungary, and Austria. This year-long endeavor aimed to address the Sustainable Development Goals within their local communities and school premises. The opportunity to share their experiences, learn from global counterparts, and exchange ideas significantly enriched the students’ understanding of sustainability challenges and fostered a sense of global citizenship.

The Role of the Akanksha Foundation and PCMC

The Akanksha Foundation, in partnership with the PCMC, has been instrumental in nurturing and supporting the growth of Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj English Medium School. With 26 schools operating in Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and beyond, the foundation plays a pivotal role in providing essential resources, study materials, and teacher salaries. The PCMC extends its support by covering the expenses of school uniforms, ensuring that every child has an equal opportunity to pursue education regardless of their socio-economic background.

A Testament to Generosity: Rekha’s Contributions

Rekha’s unwavering commitment to education and her generosity towards rebuilding the school exemplify her dedication to social causes. Her contribution of Rs 3 crore played a pivotal role in the demolition of the old school building and the subsequent construction of a new one. Standing tall as one of the tallest structures in the industrial city, the school symbolizes hope, growth, and the boundless potential of its students.

Inspiring Future Generations: A Triumph for PCMC

The remarkable achievement of the ten students from Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj English Medium School marks a significant milestone not only for the institution but also for the PCMC and the entire community. This exceptional feat serves as a testament to the transformative power of education and the unwavering dedication of educators and mentors who strive to make a difference in the lives of young minds. By instilling a sense of purpose and fostering a spirit of innovation, the PCMC is laying the foundation for a brighter and more sustainable future.
