Pune: Human-Carrying Drones, Startup Revolutionizes Indian Defence

Sagar Defence Engineering's exceptional contributions to the field of unmanned marine vehicles and aerial technology have propelled India to the forefront of innovation in defence.

Pune-based startup is making waves by pushing the boundaries of innovation in Indian defence. Sagar Defence Engineering (SDE), a leading manufacturer of unmanned marine vehicles, has emerged as a pioneer in the field, leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics to develop groundbreaking solutions for commercial, defence, and scientific purposes. With a strong focus on hard work, determination, and talent, SDE has cemented its position as a trailblazer in the industry.

Transforming the Skies: Introducing ‘Varuna,’ the Human-Carrying Drone

One of SDE’s latest creations, ‘Varuna,’ has garnered significant attention and admiration. This remarkable drone is capable of carrying humans, revolutionizing the way we perceive aerial transportation. ‘Varuna’ was unveiled at the Naval Innovation and Indigenisation Seminar in Delhi, where it captured the imagination of Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself. This groundbreaking invention showcases SDE’s commitment to pushing boundaries and redefining what is possible in the realm of unmanned aerial vehicles.

The Visionaries Behind SDE: Capturing Maritime Excellence

The driving force behind Sagar Defence Engineering is Capt Nikunj Parashar, a former merchant navy officer, who leads the company as its CEO. Alongside him are Mridul Babbar, the company’s director, and Lakshay Dang, the CTO. The founding of SDE was fueled by Capt Parashar’s personal experiences and a burning desire to make a difference in the maritime community.

Capt Parashar’s decision to establish SDE was influenced by a tragic incident involving a close friend who went missing at sea. Determined to create innovative solutions that could enhance maritime safety and efficiency, he embarked on a mission to develop technology that could transform any boat into an unmanned vehicle. This pivotal moment laid the foundation for SDE’s journey of relentless innovation and progress.

From Humble Beginnings to Resounding Success

Sagar Defence Engineering’s remarkable growth trajectory is a testament to its unwavering commitment to excellence. Starting with a modest 120 sqft space in Mumbai in 2015, the company quickly expanded its operations and moved to a sprawling 12,000 sqft office in Chakan. Today, SDE occupies a massive 25,000 sqft office and has secured government approval for an additional two-and-a-half-acre land in Maharashtra.

The company’s achievements have not gone unnoticed, as it has garnered support from prestigious organizations like ONGC, which invested Rs 4.54 crore in SDE in 2018. With its sights set on diverse sectors, including maritime, aviation, and ground operations, SDE boasts an impressive portfolio of unmanned surface vehicles and drone platforms.

Autonomous Underwater Vehicle for Mine Countermeasures

SDE’s team of talented engineers and scientists are currently immersed in an ambitious project—an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) designed for mine countermeasures. This technologically advanced AUV will be deployed from warships, enabling efficient and safe operations in hazardous maritime environments. With extensive research and development spanning over 18 months, SDE is on the cusp of a groundbreaking breakthrough that will undoubtedly have far-reaching implications.

Armed Forces’ Drones: Enhancing Security and Communication

SDE’s contributions extend beyond the civilian sector, as it caters to the needs of the armed forces. The company manufactures drones tailored for the specific requirements of defense personnel. These drones, similar to the ones utilized by the UP Police, come equipped with daylight cameras and speaker-mounted platforms. This integration enables law enforcement agencies to effectively communicate and make announcements to people on the ground within a range of 5-10 km.

Ground Vehicle for the Air Force: Unexploded Ordinance Remover Platform

Recognizing the need for comprehensive security solutions, SDE has developed a ground vehicle that serves as an unexploded ordinance remover platform for the Air Force. This state-of-the-art vehicle is designed to eliminate the risks posed by explosive remnants of war, ensuring the safety and well-being of military personnel and civilian populations alike.
