Wrestlers Hold Talks with Sports Minister Anurag Thakur

In a significant development, a group of wrestlers, including Sakshi Malik, Bajrang Punia, and Satyawart Kadiyan, have recently visited the residence of Sports Minister Anurag Thakur in New Delhi to engage in discussions with him. This meeting takes place amidst their ongoing protest against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. The wrestlers have been actively voicing their concerns and seeking resolutions for the issues they have raised.

Wrestlers’ Delegation Seeks Resolution

The meeting with Sports Minister Anurag Thakur marks the second time that the wrestlers have engaged with government officials to express their grievances. Prior to meeting the Sports Minister, they had an audience with Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday night. The delegation comprised wrestlers, as well as their coaches, who gathered at the official residence of the Home Minister on the evening of June 3.

During the extensive two-hour meeting, the wrestlers emphasized the urgency of timely action and requested an impartial investigation. In response, Home Minister Amit Shah assured them of having faith in the investigative process, which is currently underway, and stated that justice would prevail. The wrestlers also appealed to the Home Minister to withdraw the First Information Report (FIR) lodged against them. The FIR was filed on May 28 when the wrestlers participated in a march towards the newly inaugurated Parliament building and were subsequently charged with rioting.

Investigations Into Harassment Allegations

In a separate development, the Delhi Police initiated investigations into the sexual harassment allegations against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the chief of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). On June 6, a team of Delhi Police officers visited Mr Singh’s residence located in Gonda district, Uttar Pradesh, to gather information and record statements from approximately a dozen employees and associates associated with him. The investigating team conducted interviews late Monday and continued their inquiries on Tuesday morning.

It is worth mentioning that the wrestlers have been raising their voices against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, demanding accountability and justice regarding the allegations made against him. The visit by the police team to Mr Singh’s residence signifies a step forward in the investigation process, aiming to uncover the truth and address the serious accusations levelled against the WFI chief.

Wrestlers’ Determination and the Way Forward

The wrestlers’ persistent efforts to bring attention to their concerns have garnered significant support and media coverage. Their unwavering determination and commitment to ensuring transparency, fairness, and safety within the wrestling community are commendable. By engaging in dialogue with high-ranking government officials, such as Sports Minister Anurag Thakur and Home Minister Amit Shah, the wrestlers aim to find practical solutions and resolutions for the issues at hand.

As this situation unfolds, it is crucial for all stakeholders involved to maintain an open and constructive dialogue, prioritize the well-being of the athletes, and uphold the principles of justice. The wrestling community and its supporters eagerly await further updates and actions that will address the grievances raised and ensure a fair and inclusive environment for all.
