The weather pattern: Light rainfall expected

Weather expert Vineet Kumar Singh has confirmed that Pune will experience a break in the monsoon season commencing from Friday, lasting at least till August 15. This forecast aligns with the Met department’s predictions at the end of July.

Rainfall distribution across Pune

Within the 12-hour period ending at 8.30pm on Thursday, the recorded rainfall ranged from no rain in Lavale to 3mm in Chinchwad. The Shivajinagar area received 2.2mm, Lohegaon got 1.4mm, and Magarpatta only 0.5mm.

Heavy rainfall in isolated ghat sections

In contrast, some ghat sections have received heavy to very heavy rainfall. Lonavla recorded 18mm, Shirota 22mm, Bhivpuri 10mm, and Khopoli 13mm. A few regions have been hit by heavy spells, with Koyna recording 92mm, Ambone 82mm, Dawdi 75mm, and Shirgaon 70mm.

Impact on agriculture and short-duration crops

Dr. Akshay Deoras, a research scientist at the University of Reading, UK, emphasized the consequences on agriculture. The forecasted rainfall, likely to remain below normal across most of western and southern India, may impact the growth of short-duration crops such as soybean in Maharashtra and other kharif crops in areas with less rainfall.
