Revival of Monsoon Brings Heavy Rainfall Prospects to Ghat Areas in Pune.
As the monsoon season advances, Pune and its surrounding ghat areas can expect a much-needed respite from the scorching heat and dryness. Weather experts from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Pune, have predicted a revival of the monsoon after June 23, with heavy rainfall anticipated in isolated regions of Konkan and the adjacent ghat areas of Pune city and district around June 26. This favourable weather pattern benefits the dam catchment areas and replenishes the parched soil, relieving the water-starved region.
Monsoon Revival and Rainfall Predictions
Anupam Kashyapi, the head of the weather forecasting division at IMD Pune, revealed that the monsoon is expected to regain momentum after June 23. He further stated that the ghat areas of Pune might witness heavy rainfall, accompanied by warnings on June 25. However, the city areas will likely experience only light to moderate rain during this period. The much-needed precipitation will help recharge the dam catchment areas and bring much-needed relief to the region.
The revival of the monsoon can be attributed to two key factors. Firstly, the gradual strengthening of the westerly winds will aid in advancing the rain-bearing clouds. Secondly, developing an offshore trough over north Maharashtra will likely contribute to improved weather conditions. This trough formation, coupled with the pressure gradient over the Sahyadri range, is expected to result in widespread rainfall across Konkan. The adjacent regions of Madhya Maharashtra may also receive scattered to fairly widespread rain during this period.
Rainfall Projections and Dam Water Levels
Vineet Kumar Singh, a researcher from the Typhoon Research Centre at Jeju National University, South Korea, shared valuable insights regarding rainfall projections. According to Singh, Pune ghats can anticipate approximately 40-50mm of rainfall on June 25-26. The precipitation intensity is expected to escalate on June 27-28, with Lonavla, Khandala, and Tamhini likely to witness over 100mm of rainfall. While immediate filling of dams is unlikely due to the absence of torrential downpours, a gradual rise in dam water levels is anticipated to commence from June 27.
